Merkel Suhl Model 147 – 12 Gauge Side-by-Side Shotgun – 1993 Production This German-made Merkel Suhl Model 147 side-by-side double barrel shotgun, serial number 647651, is chambered in 12 gauge, 3-inch, and reflects the fine craftsmanship for which Merkel is internationally recognized. Produced in May 1993 (date code 593), this example is in stunning condition and showcases both artistry and function. The shotgun features 28-inch barrels with bright, shiny bores and excellent rifling. Both barrels retain their original deep bluing with only the faintest signs of use. The right barrel is choked cylinder, while the left barrel is choked modified. A single brass bead front sight completes the classic configuration. The boxlock receiver is exquisitely engraved, with a duck scene on the left side, a complementary engraving on the right, and the traditional Suhl logo on the underside, all surrounded by finely detailed scrollwork. The ears are enhanced with matching scroll engraving, giving the action elegant continuity. Brass cocking indicators on both sides remain fully functional. The tang safety is topped with an engraved “S”, while the barrel release and its indicator on the left ear are both finely detailed, with the release itself strawed. The trigger system features a single trigger within a blued trigger guard decorated with scroll engraving, showing excellent original finish. The water table and barrel flats bear crisp factory markings, proof stamps, and matching serial numbers. The walnut stock set is beautifully preserved. The forearm is checkered, with its underside release lever engraved and further embellishments where the forearm meets the receiver. It displays a striking wood grain and remains in excellent condition. The English-style buttstock features a checkered pistol grip, an attractive patina, and a smooth, light gloss finish. It is fitted with a black polymer buttplate that remains in remarkable condition. This Merkel Suhl Model 147 is a stunning example of German gunmaking tradition, both mechanically sound and aesthetically refined. With its fine engraving, functional cocking indicators, and excellent preservation, this shotgun is both a collector’s piece and a field-ready sporting arm. FFL Status: Curio & Relic (C&R)
