Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Carbine – .405 WCF – Exceptional Condition This Winchester Model 70, serial number 39553, is a rare pre-war carbine chambered in .405 Winchester Center Fire (WCF). Produced in 1941 with both barrel and receiver so dated, this rifle is a seldom-seen and highly desirable variation of Winchester’s iconic Model 70 line. The rifle features a 20-inch barrel with a bright, shiny bore and crisp rifling. The barrel address is clear and well-defined, and the original factory bluing remains excellent, showing only the faintest silvering near the muzzle. The rifle is fitted with a hooded front sight and an adjustable buckhorn rear sight. The receiver retains its original matte black finish, with clear Winchester markings on the left side and a matching serial number on the right, which corresponds to the bolt. The bolt action is smooth and fitted with the traditional pre-war safety located at the right rear of the bolt handle. The steel trapdoor floorplate and trigger guard show only light silvering on the edges from age and use, retaining the majority of their original bluing. The factory walnut stock features finely checkered forearm and pistol grip panels, paired with the original checkered steel buttplate. The stock retains its original 13 ½-inch length of pull and has not been altered. A few small mars are visible on the right side of the buttstock, along with light surface scratches behind the forearm checkering, but overall the stock remains in phenomenal condition. The wood displays attractive grain, a warm patina, and a light factory gloss finish. Factory sling swivels are present on both the forend and buttstock, and both remain in excellent condition. This Winchester Model 70 carbine remains in outstanding overall condition, showing excellent originality and only minor signs of careful use. Chambered in the scarce and powerful .405 WCF, this rifle represents a truly unique configuration of the pre-war Model 70.
