Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Carbine – .300 Magnum – Pre-War Production This Winchester Model 70, serial number 44763, is a scarce pre-war carbine chambered in .300 Magnum, combining Winchester’s renowned craftsmanship with rarity in configuration. The barrel is dated December 1941 and the receiver 1942, placing this rifle firmly in the early WWII production era. The rifle features a 20-inch barrel with a bright, shiny bore and sharp rifling. The barrel retains outstanding original factory bluing with only faint silvering at the muzzle, and the Winchester barrel address remains crisp and clear. It is fitted with a hooded front sight, while the rear sight slot is filled with a blank. The rifle is also equipped with a Lyman 57W rear peep sight, which retains clear markings and smooth adjustments. The receiver shows excellent original matte finish, factory drilled and tapped only on the top. The left side bears the Winchester trademark, and the matching serial number is stamped on the right side and bolt. The bolt action is smooth, operating with a pre-war strawed safety, located at the right rear of the bolt assembly. The steel floorplate and trigger guard display excellent bluing, with only minor silvering along the edges. The factory walnut stock is beautifully preserved, featuring finely checkered forearm and pistol grip panels. The stock retains a striking grain and rich patina, with only a few very fine surface mars from handling. The stock measures the original 13 ½-inch length of pull and remains unaltered. The original checkered steel buttplate is in excellent condition, and both the forend and buttstock retain their factory sling swivels. This rifle remains in excellent overall condition, showing careful maintenance and originality throughout. Scarce in the .300 Magnum carbine configuration, this pre-war Model 70 is an outstanding example for collectors and Winchester enthusiasts alike—truly a collector’s dream.
