Winchester Model 1873 – .38 WCF – Antique This antique Winchester Model 1873 lever-action rifle, serial number 297938B, is chambered in .38 WCF (.38-40) and represents one of the most iconic firearms of the American West. Known as “The Gun That Won the West,” the Winchester 1873 remains one of the most desirable and collectible lever-action rifles ever produced. This rifle is fitted with a 24-inch octagon barrel and a full-length magazine tube. The barrel is equipped with a German-silver blade front sight and an elevator-adjustable rear sight. It retains a smooth, aged finish with silvering on the edges and muzzle, along with some minor mars near the muzzle. The bore remains in good condition for its age, showing visible rifling. The overall finish exhibits an attractive, even fading with a brown patina consistent with its age. The barrel address retains a clear, stamped Winchester two-line marking. The receiver shows silvering along the edges with very light scattered oxidation, but remains in fine condition. The dust cover slides smoothly on the top rail. The lever action cycles cleanly, with the strawed hammer holding properly. The lever itself shows minor oxidation but retains good original finish, with the rear-mounted lever safety functioning as intended. The blued surfaces on the barrel, magazine tube, forend cap, receiver, loading lever, and buttplate all display a warm, brown patina with appropriate silvering on edges and contact points. The frame is constructed of iron, typical of this production era. Serial number is clearly stamped on the lower tang, with the model designation stamped on the upper tang. The walnut forearm shows only light mars and darkening near the receiver and forend cap, but remains in excellent condition. The straight-grain walnut buttstock displays beautiful figure with only minor handling marks. The original metal buttplate features a sliding trapdoor for a cleaning rod (not included). This Winchester 1873 remains in wonderful overall condition, showing honest age and use while retaining strong originality. With its clear Winchester markings, matching patina, and collectible .38 WCF chambering, this rifle offers both historical significance and display appeal. A highly desirable firearm for Winchester enthusiasts and collectors of antique American arms. FFL Status: Antique
